Lately our market has been quite competitive. My assistants do a lot for me to push to make things happen. Sometimes they can get a little discouraged just like someone local would. However be sensitive to the fact that not only can this happen, they are virtual so they can feel the challenges yet feel a little less empowered because of any distance barriers.

So what do I do? Encourage them. Celebrate their wins. In the midst of lifting them up, help them see the urgency of the matter though. Show them how they can contribute to help resolve the challenges. If you have hired a top performer, they will be up for the challenge. Word choice is key and no two assistants can be handled the same way in my experience. Each lives in their own place with their own life and their own circumstances. Being sensitive to that will get you lots of support and appreciation. Meeting them ‘where they are’ makes a huge impact in what you can ask of them later.

So push them yes, but reward them as well because they are people too and they are looking for you to lead. Even the most self motivated person could use an encouraging word. Support your assistants and they will gladly return the favor.
